With a population of 178,166 as of July 2005, and being the second fastest growing large city in America, North Las Vegas is a thriving place to live. With the nearby Las Vegas being the center of United States gambling, its no small wonder that four hotel-casinos take places in the top 10 list of the city's major employers, three of whom are in the top 5: Bellagio Hotel & Casino has between 8,000 and 9,000 employees, while MGM Grand Hotel & Casino and Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino follow closely behind with 7,000 to 8,000. The only companies that can top these gambling and hospitality giants are the Clark County School District, with over 20,000 employees, and Clark County itself, with between 9,000 and 10,000.
Other major employers are the Mirage Hotel & Casino, with between 5,000 and 6,000 employees, the State Of Nevada with the same, and Caesar's Palace Hotel & Casino, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, and the University of Nevada Las Vegas, with between 4,000 and 5,000 employees each. In total, the leisure and hospitality industry of Las Vegas holds approximately 247,600 employees, with the next largest group being trade, transportation and utilities: A small group in comparison, with only 140,000 workers.
The median income for a household in the city was $46,057 as of the 2000 census. The unemployment rate for the city was 4.0% in February of 2005. |
